Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Group for Woodside Residents
In 2015 both Judy Miller and her husband Bob began to see changes in Bob’s abilities both physically and cognitively. They turned to Bob’s physician and the journey began to find out the cause. Numerous visits to neurologists, various tests and documentation of behaviors finally lead to his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Judy knew she needed help as there was no road map for the journey they were already facing. Despite their education levels, they both held doctorates, and Judy’s 37 years as an educator and lifelong volunteer, she felt alone. Ever the educator, Judy sought assistance online, from local professionals and through personal research. She thought there had to be a better way to navigate this journey and she committed to helping others as they faced similar challenges.
Four years ago, Bob passed and Judy joined forces with Daria Carney, who had recently founded “We Are One,” a small group of caregivers in Woodside dedicated to helping people navigate dementia and Alzheimer’s. Daria’s husband suffered from Alzheimer’s and passed away in 2021. The group has grown to 25 members, both men and women, and continues to welcome new members every month. In their monthly meetings, fellow caregivers share similar experiences, fears, and challenges. They understand and respect each other, supporting one another through the journey ahead.
“We Are One” will help you navigate the unknown, share experiences and resources, and be your guiding light. You can share as much or as little as you want to. Fellow caregivers will listen, help you grasp what lies ahead, and assist you in making strategic life decisions. You’ll learn how to identify behaviors and respond positively, redirecting and diffusing difficult situations. With Judy’s step-by-step guidance, you will gradually develop a less stressful and calmer outlook.
Reflecting on her journey, Judy states, “After 37 years as an educator and volunteer, this is the best thing I’ve done in my career.” Her dedication and passion for helping others through “We Are One” has created a supportive community that continues to grow and thrive.
If you are a caregiver for a spouse or loved one living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, give yourself and your loved one the greatest gift. Judy offers her support at no cost.
