What is the 44 Club? It’s more than just a name; it’s a testament to the enduring power of friendship. This unique group of eight extraordinary women, all born in 1944, has shared more than 25 years of laughter, tears, and unforgettable memories. This year, they proudly celebrate their 80th birthdays together, a milestone that deepens the bond they’ve nurtured over decades.

Their journey began on the golf course, where a shared love for the game brought them together. All but one of these remarkable women are avid golfers. The non-golfer, however, brings something equally special to the table—membership at the prestigious Sage Valley Golf Club, a privilege that has become a cherished part of their tradition. But more on that later.

The members of the 44 Club—Linda Walters, Gloria Supansic, Patty Oakland, Cindy McHale, Sergine Schneider, Bonnie Nowak, Dinah Bunn, and Barbara Burns—each bring their own vibrant energy to the group. Linda Walters, the heart and soul of the 44 Club, is a whirlwind of energy and the mastermind behind every gathering. It was Linda who envisioned the club’s formation, drawing upon lifelong connections. She and Gloria have been friends since first grade, and Barbara, a college roommate, moved to Woodside to remain close to her dear friend.

Through the highs and lows of life, these women have stood by each other, offering support and love that only such deep friendships can provide.

To commemorate their 60th birthdays in 2004, each woman received a 14Kt gold charm engraved with “44 Club” on one side and their initials on the other—a symbol of their enduring connection that they wear proudly to their monthly meetings. Birthdays, as you might imagine, are celebrated in style. From shooting lessons at the Turkey Federation to a delightful cooking class by Barbara Burns. They continue to donate to charitable organizations with donations to Aiken Senior Life Services, Friends of the Library and many more.

One of their more adventurous outings led them to Exit 44 off Highway 20, a humble truck stop. Dressed in their finest, they confidently strode into the diner, took their seats, and ordered lunch, much to the surprise of the truckers around them. The food may have been forgettable, but the memory of that day, with its mix of boldness and humor, is anything but.

A highlight of every year is their Christmas celebration at Sage Valley, thanks to Patty’s membership. Sage Valley pulls out all the stops to make the day magical. For their 75th birthdays, the club prepared personalized menus with each woman’s name, played music from the 1940s, and even set the scene with mannequins dressed as a nurse and a soldier.

These women meet once a month, gathering to share stories, catch up on each other’s lives, and celebrate the enduring gift of their friendship. Laughter flows freely, and with each meeting, the bond that holds them together grows even stronger.
